Finding Purpose through Opportunity

Mary Namuyomba, a former Rockies member and Finance Assistant, now pursuing a career in community health.
When Mary Namuyomba joined Rockies Organization in 2013, she was just sixteen years old with big dreams but few clear opportunities to pursue them. Like many young people navigating uncertain circumstances, she needed support, guidance, and a platform where she could grow both academically and personally.
Growing up, Mary had seen how easily education could slip out of reach when families lacked the resources or support systems to sustain it. Joining Rockies became a turning point in her life, offering not only the stability she needed to stay in school but also the mentorship that would shape her confidence and ambitions.
With the organization’s support, Mary was able to remain in school and successfully complete her Advanced Level studies. Recognizing her dedication and potential, Rockies continued to invest in her growth by supporting her to pursue two professional qualifications – a Diploma in Finance and Accounting and later a Certificate in Nursing. These opportunities equipped her with practical skills in both financial management and healthcare, opening doors to multiple career pathways.
Yet Mary’s experience at Rockies extended far beyond formal education. Through the organization’s performing arts programs, she discovered new confidence and a deeper sense of purpose. Participating in cultural performances helped her develop creativity, teamwork, and leadership skills that would later influence her professional journey.
“Rockies helped me discover abilities in myself that I didn’t know I had,” Mary recalls. “It gave me the confidence to believe that my future could be bigger than my circumstances.”
Mary was also given the opportunity to work with Rockies as a Finance Assistant, a role that allowed her to gain hands-on experience while contributing to the organization’s mission. Through this position, she strengthened her professional skills and deepened her understanding of community-focused work.
Her journey with Rockies also brought experiences that expanded her worldview. Through performing arts programs, Mary travelled to Egypt twice, participating in international cultural exchanges. These visits exposed her to new cultures, perspectives, and ideas, leaving a lasting impression on how she viewed her own role in society.
During these exchanges, Mary developed a strong interest in community health and social impact. Seeing how communities in different parts of the world approached healthcare and social support inspired her to pursue nursing. Today, she is particularly passionate about serving vulnerable groups, including young mothers, girls, and children living with cerebral palsy.
Mary continues to carry forward the lessons she learned during her time with Rockies – discipline, compassion, leadership, and a commitment to serving others. What began as an opportunity for a young girl to stay in school has grown into a lifelong mission to improve the wellbeing of others in her community.
Her story reflects the deeper impact of Rockies Organization’s work: creating pathways for young people to discover their potential, gain education and life skills, and use those opportunities to uplift the communities around them.
