One Opportunity, A Family Transformed

Joyce Patricia Nabukenya, a university student and emerging leader, performing a cultural dance.

Joyce Nabukenya grew up in Wabiyinja Village in Wakiso District, the second of three children in a family that often struggled to make ends meet. Her parents were petty traders whose small incomes could barely provide for the family’s basic needs, let alone consistently cover school fees. Getting to school itself was not easy. Joyce often had to walk long distances each day, sometimes using risky shortcuts just to attend classes. Despite these challenges, she remained determined to continue her education and make the most of every opportunity that came her way.

From a young age, Joyce showed a strong passion and talent for dance. She would often participate in community events and small performances, where her energy and enthusiasm stood out. The small contributions she received from these performances helped her buy basic scholastic materials and stay in school. For Joyce, dance was more than just an artistic expression—it was also a small but important lifeline that helped her keep her dream of education alive.

In August 2017, Joyce joined Rockies Organization, a step that would soon change the course of her life. Sadly, just a month after joining the organization, her father passed away. At the time, her elder sister was in Senior Six and her younger brother was in Primary Two. The loss placed an even heavier burden on their mother, who suddenly had to shoulder the responsibility of supporting the entire family alone.

Rockies stepped in to support Joyce through educational sponsorship, mentorship, accommodation, meals, and healthcare. This support ensured that Joyce could continue her education without interruption, but it also had a much wider impact. By taking care of Joyce’s needs, the organization significantly reduced the financial pressure on her mother, allowing her to concentrate on supporting Joyce’s siblings and keeping them in school.

Today, Joyce is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Office and Information Management at Makerere University Business School in Kampala, and she continues to grow under the mentorship and care of the organization. Alongside her studies, she remains active within the troupe and has developed into one of its young leaders, supporting younger members and contributing to the group’s performances.

Recognizing her dedication, discipline, and potential, Rockies is also mentoring Joyce to grow into the role of Finance and Administration Manager of the organization. This mentorship is helping her build the leadership, financial management, and administrative skills needed to take on greater responsibility within the organization.

The support Joyce received also transformed the trajectory of her entire family. Her elder sister has since completed her studies, while her younger brother is currently in Senior Four. With Joyce’s education taken care of, their mother was able to focus her limited resources on the other children and ensure they also remained in school.

Joyce’s story shows how supporting one young person can create a ripple effect that lifts an entire family. By investing in her education, talent, and leadership potential, Rockies did more than support a student. It helped create stability and opportunity for a whole household.
