Rising and Lifting Others Along: Sharon Nabbanja's story

Sharon Nabbanja, a former Rockies member, now Co-Founder, Karibu Youth Performers - Africa ()KAYP - Africa.
When Sharon Nabbanja joined Rockies Organization in 2012, she was a young woman determined to build a future through her skills and creativity. At the time, she was studying at the YMCA Comprehensive Institute in Kampala, pursuing a Certificate in Cosmetology. However, the path to completing her education was far from secure
Before joining Rockies, Sharon had been supported by the Katwe Youth Development Association, where she was first introduced to several Ugandan cultural dances, though only at a basic level. But when the organization lost the funding that sustained many young people under its care, Sharon’s education was suddenly at risk. Without reliable support, continuing her studies became increasingly difficult.
That moment of uncertainty led her to Rockies Organization. With the support she received there, Sharon was able to remain in school and successfully complete her cosmetology course. Beyond that, the organization also supported her to acquire additional vocational skills through training in tailoring, equipping her with practical skills that would later become an important part of her livelihood.
However, the most profound transformation in Sharon’s life came through talent development. When she joined Rockies, but her understanding of the cultural dances she knew was still limited to the basics. Through the structured training, regular performances and mentorship she received, she gradually developed a deeper appreciation and stronger mastery of these dances while learning many more from across Uganda and some other African countries. Over time, her confidence and professionalism as a performer grew significantly.
As her skills and confidence developed, new opportunities followed. Sharon began performing at major national events and eventually represented the troupe on international stages, including a performance in India. Later, she secured a performance contract that took her to Taiwan, where she earned a significant income. These experiences broadened her perspective and helped her see the performing arts not only as cultural expression but also as a pathway for leadership and professional growth.
Inspired by her experiences, Sharon decided to extend the opportunity to others. In 2022, she co-founded Karibu Youth Performers Africa, an initiative dedicated to nurturing young talent and creating new opportunities for emerging performers.
Today, Sharon continues to build her career in both the creative and entrepreneurial worlds. Alongside her work in the performing arts, she runs a tailoring business in Kampala, drawing on the practical skills she developed during her time at Rockies.
Looking back, Sharon’s story shows how mentorship, training, and exposure can transform raw talent into leadership. From a young student struggling to remain in school to a performer, entrepreneur, and co-founder of a youth arts initiative, she now inspires the next generation of young creatives to believe in the possibilities within their own talents.
