Stitching a New Future: Shakira’s Journey from Dance to Design

Shakira Nassali’s journey with Rockies Organization is a story of growth, resilience, and creativity. When she first joined the organization in 2012, she was a talented young performer with passion and energy, but little professional experience. Like many young people with artistic ability, she had potential but lacked the exposure and guidance needed to turn that talent into meaningful opportunities.

Through consistent training, mentorship, and performance opportunities at Rockies, Shakira’s skills and confidence steadily grew. The troupe became a space where she could refine her craft, learn discipline, and experience the power of teamwork. As her abilities developed, new doors began to open. In 2014, Shakira travelled to China to take part in commercial performances – an experience that exposed her to international audiences and allowed her to earn significant income from her talent for the first time.

The experience broadened her perspective and showed her the possibilities that could emerge when talent is nurtured and supported. “Performing abroad helped me realize that what we do as artists has real value. It made me believe that I could build a future from my skills.” Shakira says.

When she returned to Uganda in 2019, Shakira resumed performing with Rockies. But around the same time, the organization was also encouraging members to think about building skills beyond performance so they could create more sustainable livelihoods. That year, Shakira joined a fashion design and tailoring training program organized for members of the Bantu Cultural Troupe.

The training opened a new path for her. With practical skills and a growing entrepreneurial mindset, Shakira began to see how creativity on stage could connect with creativity in business. With financial support from Rockies Organization, she established a tailoring business in Katwe, Kampala, turning her new skills into a reliable source of income.

Today, Shakira proudly earns her livelihood through her tailoring business. Her work has enabled her to purchase land, build a house, and provide for her child—achievements that reflect both stability and independence. At the same time, she continues to maintain a strong connection with Rockies, now working with the organization as a service provider. Through her business, she designs and produces costumes for the troupe’s performances, contributing to the same artistic community that once helped shape her fuuture.

Shakira’s story is a powerful example of how nurturing talent can lead to much more than artistic success. By combining performance with practical skills and entrepreneurship, she has built a sustainable future for herself and her family.
