Aggrey Tibiita

Gender: Male
Talent Area: Traditional Instrumentalist
Family Background
Aggrey Tibiita was born and raised in Nakisenyi Village, a rural community in Iganga District, Eastern Uganda. He comes from a large family of eleven members and lives with both parents. The household survives on a very limited and unstable income of approximately two dollars a day. His father, a former member of a local amateur dance troupe, relied on occasional engagements, while his mother practiced subsistence farming. With many dependents and no stable employment, the family struggled to consistently meet basic needs and support Aggrey’s education.
As the fifth-born among nine children, Aggrey often sacrificed personal needs so that his younger siblings could attend school or have enough food. Despite these hardships, he remained cheerful and hopeful – qualities that are reflected in his musical expression. From a young age, Aggrey regularly accompanied his father to troupe rehearsals, where he naturally developed a strong interest in and aptitude for playing traditional instruments.
How Rockies Organization Stepped In
Aggrey was introduced to Rockies Organization by another member – Swabul Kitonto, who recognized his natural sense of rhythm and growing interest in percussion instruments. Upon joining Rockies, Aggrey gained access to a structured and supportive environment where his talent could be nurtured.
The organization supported his education, provided mentorship, and offered regular training and performance opportunities, helping him build confidence, discipline, and artistic skill. Through Rockies’ education sponsorship, Aggrey is currently (2025) in Primary Seven at Twinlight Children Centre and is able to attend school consistently without the fear of being sent home due to unpaid fees. He balances his studies with regular rehearsals and performances with the troupe.
Talent, Uniqueness & Achievements
Aggrey is a gifted percussionist with a natural connection to rhythm. He is particularly skilled in playing cultural Kiganda & Kisoga drums, xylophones and the rhythm bow harp. His ability to quickly learn, imitate, and adapt complex traditional rhythms sets him apart from his peers.
In addition to instrumental performance, Aggrey also performs several traditional dances, including Ekitaguriro & Ekizino from Western Uganda, Larakaraka from Northern Uganda, and Kadodi from the Eastern region. He is known for his quiet strength and humility, blending playfulness with professionalism. He also shows a strong interest in exploring how traditional instruments can be used in modern creative spaces.
Aspirations
Aggrey holds two strong ambitions. He dreams of becoming one of Uganda’s leading DJs, blending traditional drumming patterns with modern beats and electronic sound. At the same time, he hopes to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, motivated by a desire to support animal health and improve livelihoods in his rural community. Both aspirations reflect his determination to create positive change and bring pride to his family and village.
